Maintaining A Limestone Fountain

Once you have that unique, beautiful limestone fountain installed in your yard, you want to ensure that it stays as lovely as it was the day you had it installed. Limestone is a sturdy, durable material, but anything you leave outside is going to have to withstand different elements. Good fountain care doesn’t take more than an hour or so every month, but it’ll be worth your time to keep the feature looking great and running properly. Here are some tips to help you get started on maintenance.

Watch The Operation

When you first get your limestone fountain installed, you’ll want to take a few days to watch how it runs. Decide how much water you need to add to the fountain and how often. You will want the water levels to stay steady so the pump doesn’t get damaged and can run smoothly. The water will evaporate eventually so you’ll need to add water or change it out completely on occasion.

Limestone Fountain Care

One thing you’ll want to ensure is that the pump is always submerged in water. Don’t let it run dry when it is on or it could damage the motor. If you don’t refill the water and keep it at a certain level, the pump could burn out. The pump is basically the heart of the fountain and you will want to wipe it down and clean it on occasion. Turn the fountain off during cleaning sessions, otherwise, keep it on at all times. Only turn it off if you are going out of town and don’t have a way to keep it filled.

Clean The Fountain

Most fountains need a cleaning every one to three months so you don’t have too much algae build up or mineral deposits. Wipe down and clean your fountain and don’t forget to pay special attention to the pump. Use a scrub brush and dish detergent with warm water to get rid of deposits and other residue.

Pump Maintenance

Cleaning the pump is essential and it’s something anyone can do. Check over instructions from the manufacturer on how to take the pump apart and then, soak the parts in vinegar solutions.  You can break down mineral deposits that have built up. If you have hard water, you might have to clean the pump more than once a month. If the pump gets clogged with debris, like leaves and other things that blow into the fountain, you will want to wipe those things away as often as necessary.

Winter Fountain Care

If your weather gets cold, you’ll want to drain the basin and possible even take the pump inside once the temperature starts dropping. You can give everything a thorough cleaning and let the fountain sit as a lovely statue until the weather warms up.  You don’t want the lines to freeze up with water so it’s best to keep it cleared out during the frozen months.
