Sheet of Marble Showing its intricate details representing its versatility

Marble’s Versatility

Marble is a naturally-occurring stone that has a wide variety of uses. Because of the ease of molding and manufacturing items with the material, it has been used over the years to create items that are both practical and decorative. Across the world, marble has cultural and sometimes religious significance, as many churches are made, in part, of marble, and it is featured in the homes of many wealthy people, including royalty. With all of its uses, though, the unique uses far out number the simpler, expected uses.

Cold Slab for Culinary Use

Marble has the ability to get cold, and remain that way. An ice cream store discovered  this fact, and was named The Marble Slab for their signature, a marble slab on which cookies, candies, and other toppings are kneaded into ice cream, and mixed with other flavors. The ice cream creation comes in several sizes to fit all appetites. Marble sheets are also used to measure, knead and roll pastry dough. There are marble boards to serve charcuterie, and marble-finished knives.

Mortar and Pestle

Perhaps more for decoration than for practical use, marble mortar and pestles have gained some popularity in the last few years. Used to grind food, herbs, or medicine, mortar and pestles have been used all over the world for at least the last thousand years. Marble mortar and pestles bring a chic look to the process of food preparation, and make a lovely addition to already-attractive kitchens.

Wine Cooler

As previously stated, marble has the ability to get cold, and stay cold, making it a great candidate for use as an insulator, or cooler. Wine is more popular among millennials than it has ever been, and white wines are supposed to be served chilled. Marble wine coolers are available at high-end home accessory retailers, and make excellent gifts for wine lovers.

Plaque

Awards and trophies have occasionally been trimmed in or featured marble prominently in their structure. Trophies made partially of marble are fairly easy to obtain, if you are looking for one to award to someone who has won or accomplished something. The maker of your trophy or plaque will be able to give you details about the amount of marble available in any design that you may need.

Flooring

The most widely-practiced use of marble is for flooring in homes and public-use buildings. Many state legislatures and hotel lobbies, too, will have marble entryways. Common as they may seem in government buildings and upscale businesses, having marble in your home has been considered a mark of sophistication for decades. Sometimes marble entryways will be scratched, but scratches can be easily overlooked. Buffed marble can be slick, and dangerous, so it is as important to warn others when the marble has been cleaned as it is to clean the marble in the first place.

Sculpture

The ease of manipulation for marble has been known for thousands of years. With marble being so easy to manipulate, many renowned artists turned to marble for use as an artistic medium for sculpture. The Venus de Milo is one of the most famous marble sculptures, crafted by unknown persons in Ancient Greece. Sculptures of people weren’t the only beautiful art constructed with marble – marble vases have decorated people’s homes for centuries, sometimes painted with scenes from myths and legends. Earrings and bracelets, too, have been carved from marble, adding to the long list of amazing possibilities of marble stone.
